18th and last Gig: Darmstadt, Eledil, 1992-02-22 – Der letzte Auftritt

Today on February, 22nd 1992, exactly 34 years ago, Cloud Nine & The Vitamin C played their last live gig - at the Eledil in Darmstadt.

The line-up at the last gig: Dominik, keyboards and vocals (e.g. on Death Blues), Mike: bass and vocals (e.g. on Black Queen); Pete: guitar and vocals; A. N. Own: drums.

CNVC #6 played only two live gigs, both at the small ELEDIL Club in Darmstadt, Germany, before the band broke up. Between the 1st gig there in December 1991 and the 2nd one in February 1992 lay many weeks of rehearsals and also the first (and only) "proper" recording session in a semi-professional studio (in fact held on only 2 days, recording 6 backing tracks live in the studio and some overdubs, until the band ran out of money – so the mixing was never really finished and the mastertapes sadly seem lost. – But finally: in December 2023 Cloud Nine released those studio recordings remasterd on vinyl.  

All the songs that were recorded in the studio earlier/later – were played live at the Eledil concerts, and they differ very much form the studio versions. The live version of Draw Down The Distance from the first gig was nearly 19 minutes spaced out jamming, while the second Eledil concert version was much more structured (more in the style of the studio version and also much shorter).

Also of note are the relativly heavy/punk-ish sounding newer songs like Call, My Sunday On a Friday, I Don't Care or No Difference as well as the rearrangements of older "classics" like Rainfrontier or I'm Lost – all played pretty heavy and in strong contrast to the more psychedelic jam tracks, e.g. Sunspots. The band, featuring the new, very competent guitar player Pete Hergo, was looking for a new direction around that time and the results sound quite promising with the newer songs showing a clear influence of bands like THE CURE (I Don't Care), GREEN ON RED (Walking My Road) or even THE CHARLATANS' rave sound (My Sunday On A Friday). Clearly a new evolution and a welcome addition to the more Sixties oriented older CNVC sound with tracks like I'm Lost or Car Car or Rainfrontier (more in the mood of 60s Garage bands like THE ELECTRIC PRUNES or the acid rock of THE DOORS or early PINK FLOYD psychedelia (Brainstorm, Black Queen)).

 

The last gig was also unusual in that some songs were new to the program and were only played live once (I Don't Care, On An Ordinary Day, It Makes No Difference). The last encore was Der Sandmann ist tot = The Sandman is Dead, a very strange song, written by keyboard player Dominik, that wouldn't have sounded out of place in the Wim Wenders movie HIMMEL ÜBER BERLIN. The only song on the setlist in German, by the way; it was also only played live twice, both times at the Eledil.

After this gig, not only the Sandman was dead, but also the band ... 

Black Queen was the song that was played live most often. Thirteen times in total.

 
We weren't a blues band, but always saw ourselves as a psychedelic rock band. A blues song was still part of it, after all, there were also extremely psychedelic blues songs by our heroes in the sixties (think of Bass Strings or Death Sound Blues by Country Joe & The Fish or Ball & Chain by Big Brother & The Holding Company, to name just the best known). Death Blues has been in the program since the legendary second Heppenheim Oase gig in 1989 and has been performed from time to time; we have played it live a total of eight times, and this version is probably one of the best. While Death Sound Blues by Country Joe & the Fish (who admittedly helped inspire the song) is an anti-Vietnam War song, Death Blues is hardly less tragic. (It's about suicide ... and as we all know, that usually ends fatally).

Heute am 22.02.1992, also genau vor 34 Jahren, war der letzte Live-Gig von Cloud Nine & The Vitamin C – im Eledil in Darmstadt.

Die Besetzung beim letzten Gig: Dominik, Keyboards und Gesang (z. B. bei Death Blues), Mike: Bass und Gesang (z. B. bei Black Queen); Pete: Gitarre und Gesang; A. N. Own: Schlagzeug.

CNVC #6 spielte nur zwei Live-Konzerte, beide im kleinen ELEDIL Club in Darmstadt, bevor sich die Band auflöste. Zwischen dem ersten Konzert dort im Dezember 1991 und dem zweiten im Februar 1992 lagen viele Wochen Proben und auch die erste (und einzige) „richtige“ Aufnahmesession in einem semiprofessionellen Studio (die tatsächlich nur zwei Tage dauerte, an denen sechs Backing-Tracks live im Studio aufgenommen und einige Overdubs gemacht wurden, bis der Band das Geld ausging – daher wurde der Mix nie wirklich fertiggestellt und die Masterbänder scheinen leider verloren gegangen zu sein. – Aber schließlich: Im Dezember 2023 veröffentlichte Cloud Nine diese Studioaufnahmen remastered auf Vinyl.  

Alle Songs, die zuvor/später im Studio aufgenommen wurden, wurden bei den Eledil-Konzerten live gespielt und unterscheiden sich stark von den Studioversionen. Die Live-Version von Draw Down The Distance vom ersten Gig war ein fast 19-minütiger, ausgedehnter Jam, während die zweite Eledil-Konzertversion viel strukturierter war (mehr im Stil der Studioversion und auch viel kürzer).

Bemerkenswert sind auch die relativ heavy/punkig klingenden neueren Songs wie Call, My Sunday On a Friday, I Don't Care oder No Difference sowie die Neuarrangements älterer „Klassiker“ wie Rainfrontier oder I'm Lost – alle ziemlich heavy gespielt und in starkem Kontrast zu den eher psychedelischen Jam-Tracks wie z. B. Sunspots. Die Band, zu der nun auch der neue, sehr kompetente Gitarrist Pete Hergo gehörte, suchte zu dieser Zeit nach einer neuen Richtung, und die Ergebnisse klingen vielversprechend, wobei die neueren Songs einen deutlichen Einfluss von Bands wie THE CURE (I Don't Care), GREEN ON RED (Walking My Road) oder sogar dem Rave-Sound von THE CHARLATANS (My Sunday On A Friday) zeigen. Eindeutig eine neue Entwicklung und eine willkommene Ergänzung zum eher an den späten 60er Jahren orientierten älteren CNVC-Sound mit Tracks wie I'm Lost, Car Car oder Rainfrontier (eher im Stil von 60er-Jahre-Garagenbands wie THE ELECTRIC PRUNES oder dem Acid Rock von THE DOORS oder der frühen Psychedelia von PINK FLOYD (Brainstorm, Black Queen)). 

Der letzte Auftritt war auch insofern ungewöhnlich, als einige Songs neu im Programm waren und nur einmal live gespielt wurden (I Don't Care, On An Ordinary Day, It Makes No Difference). Die letzte Zugabe war Der Sandman ist tot, ein sehr seltsamer Song, geschrieben vom Keyboarder Dominik, der auch in Wim Wenders' Film HIMMEL ÜBER BERLIN nicht fehl am Platz gewesen wäre. Übrigens der einzige Song auf der Setlist in deutscher Sprache; er wurde auch nur zweimal live gespielt, beide Male im Eledil.

Nach diesem Gig war dann nicht nur der Sandmann tot, sondern auch die Band …

Black Queen war der Song, der am meisten live gespielt wurde. Insgesam dreizehn Mal.

 
Wir waren zwar keine Blues-Band, sondern verstanden uns immer als eine Psychedelic-Rock-Band. Ein Blues-Titel gehörte trotzdem dazu, immerhin gab es in den Sechzigern ja auch äußerst psychedelische Blues-Songs unserer Helden (man denke zum Beispiel an Bass Strings oder Death Sound Blues von Country Joe & The Fish oder Ball & Chain von Big Brother & The Holding Company, um nur einmal die bekanntesten zu nennen). Der Death Blues war seit dem legendären zweiten Heppenheim-Oase-Auftritt 1989 im Programm und wurde immer mal wieder ausgegraben; insgesamt haben wir ihn acht Mal live gespielt, und diese Version dürfte mit die beste sein. Während es sich beim Death Sound Blues von Country Joe & the Fish (der zugegebenermaßen den Song mit inspiriert hat) um einen Anti-Vietnam-Krieg-Song handelt, geht es im Death Blues kaum weniger tragisch zu. (Er handelt von Selbstmord … und der endet bekanntermaßen ja in der Regel tödlich.)

 

17th Gig: Darmstadt, Eledil 1991-12-28

Nachdem Andy Schulz und Peter Gündling 1991 ausgestiegen waren, machte man sich erneut auf die Suche nach einem Gitarristen und einem Schlagzeuger. Und wie es der Zufall so wollte, meldete sich auf eine Kleinanzeige hin tatsächlich ein vielversprechender Gitarrist: Pete Hergo. Pete war nicht nur ein begnadeter Instrumentalist, sondern besaß zudem eine ausdrucksstarke Stimme. Und er brachte auch gleich noch einige neue Songs mit, die sich gut in das bisherige Repertoire der Band einfügten.
Pete kannte zudem einen technisch sehr guten Drummer namens Chris, an dessen Nachname sich niemand mehr zu erinnern scheint. 

Cloud Nine & The Vitamin C in der sechsten Inkarnation (mit Pete und Chris) bestand nur etwa von Juni 1991 bis Februar 1992 und spielte nur zwei Mal live; beide Male im Eledil Club in Darmstadt, bevor sich die Band auflöste. 

Am 28. Dezember 1991 war der erste der beiden Eledil-Auftritte.

Das Eledil (der Name setzt sich aus dem Anfang und dem Ende der beiden Tiernamen Elefant und Krokodil zusammen) war ein sehr schlichter „Underground“-Club im Zentrum Darmstadts, ein ehemaliges Bordell (oder doch nur eine Art Nachtclub?), das sogar einen Preis für moderne Architektur gewann, nachdem es umgestaltet und umgebaut worden war. Man hatte die Gelegenheit, viele moderne Stahlskulpturen und -möbel zu bewundern, eine kleine Bühne und ein leeres Schwimmbecken in der Mitte des Raumes – wenn man sich traute, die kleine Treppe hinunterzugehen, die ins Nirgendwo führte ...

Live unterschieden sich die Songs teilweise doch sehr stark von den später aufgenommenen Studio-Versionen. Die Fassung des psychedelischen Meisterwerks Draw Down the Distance vom ersten Eledil-Gig dauert fast 19 Minuten und ist wesentlich unstrukturierter als die spätere Studio-Version, die auf der LP zu hören ist!

Pete Hergo (g., voc.) live at the Eledil

After Andy Schulz and Peter Gündling left the band in 1991, we started looking for a guitarist and a drummer again. And as luck would have it, a promising guitarist actually came forward in response to a small ad: Pete Hergo. Pete was not only a gifted instrumentalist, but also had an expressive voice. And he also brought some new songs with him, which fitted in well with the band's existing repertoire.
Pete also knew a technically very good drummer called Chris, whose surname nobody seems to remember. 

Cloud Nine & The Vitamin C in its sixth incarnation (with Pete and Chris) only existed from around June 1991 to February 1992 and only played live twice, both times at the Eledil Club in Darmstadt, before the band split up.

The first of the two Eledil gigs was on December 28, 1991.

The Eledil (the name is made up of the beginning and the end of the two animal names elephant and crocodile in German) was a very plain "underground" club in the centre of Darmstadt, a former brothel (or just a sort of nightclub?) that even won a prize for modern architecture after it had been redesigned and rebuilt. One had the opportunity to see many modern steel sculptures and furniture, a small stage and an empty swimming pool in the middle of the room - that is, if one dared to go down the small staircase that led to nowhere land…

Live, some of the songs were very different from the studio versions recorded later. The version of the psychedelic masterpiece Draw Down the Distance from the first Eledil gig lasts almost 19 minutes and is much less structured than the later studio version that can be heard on the LP!

Cloud Nine & The Vitamin C was a psychedelic rock band from Germany that was active from 1983 to 1992. The band was founded in Heppenheim an der Bergstraße and was mainly active in the Rhine-Main area.

Core members of the band were:

    Dominik Engel (keyboard and vocals)

    Mike Schröder, also known as Mike Floyd (bass and vocals)

The band went through various line-ups, with Engel and Schröder remaining the only constant members. They began as a school band and evolved over the years.

Musical style:

    Focus on psychedelic music of the 1960s

    Influences of hard rock from the early 1970s

    Inspiration from bands like The Doors, Pink Floyd, and The Temptations

Special features:

    The band emphasised their own compositions

    Live performances were organised as multimedia events with Super 8 films and psychedelic slide projections

    They played in youth centres, at local festivals and in underground clubs.

Cloud Nine & The Vitamin C released several cassettes during their active period. Their last live performance took place on 22 February 1992 at the Eledil in Darmstadt. The band disbanded during the recording of their first album, which was never officially released.

These releases give an insight into the band's music, which was only known to a limited audience during their active period.

16th Gig: Münster (Hessen), BKA 1990-09-07

Die CNVC#5-Besetzung (Dominik: Keyboards, Gesang; Mike: Bass, Gesang; Andreas Schulz: Gitarre und Peter Gündling: Schlagzeug) hatte insgesamt vier Auftritte, alle vier im Jahr 1990.

In Münster, Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg, Hessen war der vierte und letzte Gig in dieser Besetzung.

 

Tatsächlich habe ich an diesen Auftritt überhaupt gar keine Erinnerung mehr.

Der Tape-Mitschnitt beweist allerdings, dass wir wohl sehr laut gespielt haben und Andi doch sehr in seinen Verzerrer verliebt war …

Für unsere Verhältnisse war das Set relativ kurz, und es fällt auf, dass wir weder Draw Down the Distance noch Angel of Mine spielten. Ich vermute mal, dass kaum Leute da waren, weshalb wir uns dazu entschieden, das Set kurz zu halten.

 

Psychedelic Rock war damals auf den Käffern leider nicht sehr angesagt.

Nach diesem Auftritt war erst einmal wieder Schluss mit der Band.

Andi stieg aus und auch Peter hatte schon bald darauf die Lust verloren, weiterzumachen. Musikalische Differenzen, wie es so schön heißt.

Dominik und ich, wir waren also wieder einmal auf der Suche nach neuen Musikern.

The CNVC#5 line-up (Dominik: keyboards, vocals; Mike: bass, vocals; Andreas Schulz: guitar and Peter Gündling: drums) had a total of four gigs, all in 1990.
Münster (nearby Darmstadt in Hessen) was the fourth and last one with this line-up.
 
In fact, I have no memory of this gig at all.
However, the tape recording proves that we must have played very loudly and that Andi was very much in love with his distortion unit ...

 

The set was relatively short by our standards, and it's noticeable that we didn't play Draw Down the Distance or Angel of Mine. I suppose, there were hardly any people there, which is why we decided to keep the set short. 

 

Unfortunately, psychedelic rock wasn't very popular in the villages back then.

After this gig, the band came to an end again.
Andi left and Peter soon also lost the desire to continue. Musical differences, as they say.
So Dominik and I were once again on the lookout for new musicians.

15th Gig: Mannheim-Jungbusch 1990-08-24

 

Weiter mit der Chronologie der Bandauftritte.

Mannheim-Jungbusch – oje! Keine Ahnung, wie wir zu diesem Gig kamen. Ich glaube mich vage erinnern zu können, dass Andi ihn irgendwie organisierte.

Dritter Auftritt mit Andi und Peter (Gündling).

Wir spielten bei einer Art Straßenfest, bei dem die Resonanz leider äußerst gering war. Tatsächlich bestand das Publikum vor allem aus den lokalen Suffköppen, einigen türkischen Jungs aus der Nachbarschaft, denen wir am Arsch vorbeigingen, und einigen wenigen zufällig dorthin verirrte Freaks.

Das war zutiefst enttäuschend, aber trotzdem oder vielleicht auch gerade deshalb legten wir einen ziemlich guten, recht fetzigen Auftritt hin. Mehr oder weniger spielten wir für uns – und ließen uns den Spaß daran nicht verderben.

Gab es sonst noch etwas Bemerkenswertes? 

Der Auftritt war am Nachmittag, deshalb gab es keine Lightshow.

Aus irgendeinem Grund spielten wir Rainfrontier in einem anderen Arrangement – langsam und sehr heavy, mehr so im Stil von AC/DC. Vermutlich war das Andis Idee gewesen. Ach ja, und bei Angel of Mine riss Andi eine Gitarrensaite, was ihn aber nicht daran hinderte weiterzuspielen, sodass alles unglaublich out-of-tune klang. Aber irgendwie passte das zu dem bescheuerten Gig.

On with the chronology of our live gigs.

Mannheim-Jungbusch - oh dear! I have no idea how we came to play this gig. I vaguely remember that Andi organized it somehow.

Third gig with Andi and Peter (Gündling).

We played at some kind of a street festival where the response was unfortunately extremely poor. In fact, the audience consisted mainly of the local boozers, some Turkish guys from the neighborhood who didn't give a shit about us and a few random freaks who happened to be there.

This was deeply disappointing, but despite this, or perhaps because of it, we put on a pretty good, quite heavy, snotty gig. We more or less played for ourselves - and didn't let anything spoil the fun.

Was there anything else worth mentioning? 

The gig was in the afternoon, so there was no lightshow.

For some reason we played Rainfrontier in a different arrangement - slow and very heavy, more in the style of AC/DC. That was probably Andi's idea. Oh yes, and during Angel of Mine Andi broke a guitar string, but that didn't stop him from playing on, so everything sounded incredibly out-of-tune. But somehow that suited that stupid gig.
