Am 2. Februar 1985 ist es endlich so weit: der erste „richtige“ Gig vor Publikum im Heppenheimer Jugendzentrum „Teestube Oase“.

Die
ungekürzte Version ist fast 26 Minuten lang inklusive eines 8-minütigen
Schlagzeugsolos. Rau und ein wenig schlampig gespielt, wie das damals
eben so war ... Die größten Fehler habe ich rausgeschnitten. Wie das Ende klingen sollte, waren wir uns wohl nicht so ganz einig.
On February, 2nd 1985 the time has finally come: the first "real" gig in front of an audience in the Heppenheim youth centre "Teestube Oase".

And lo and behold, the place is full at our second gig.

The unedited version is almost 26 minutes long including an 8 minute drum solo. Rough and a bit sloppy playing, as it was back then ... I cut out the biggest mistakes. Obviously we didn't quite agree on how the end should sound…
Jack o' Lantern
ist einer der Songs, an denen die drei Hauptkomponisten alle gut
zusammengearbeitet haben. Das Hauptthema sowie der Text waren von
Dominik, aber die einzelnen Parts im Mittelteil waren von Peter und
Mike. Wenn ich mir das heute so anhöre, fühle ich mich fast an frühe
NEKTAR erinnert, natürlich alles viel schlampiger und nicht so
ausgearbeitet, aber die Art und Weise, verschiedene Themen
aneinanderzuhängen, da gibt es schon Parallelen.
Jack o' Lantern
hat sich immer weiterentwickelt; es kamen schon bald neue Parts dazu
(auch für den Gesang), neue Arrangements und vor allem haben wir alles
mehr durcharrangiert und auf das ziellose "Gedudel" im Mittelteil
weitgehend verzichtet.
In
gewisser Hinsicht war der Song ein Vorläufer des späteren
Cloud-Nine-Klassikers Draw Down The Distance. Irgendwie fanden wir es
immer spannend, längere Songs zu machen und nicht nur dreiminütige
Rocksongs. Und typisch waren eben auch die improvisierten Take-off-Parts
in der Mitte oder gegen Ende eines Songs (etwa später auch bei Songs wie
Draw Down The Distance, Survivor und Empty and Cold).
Jack o' Lantern is one of the songs that the three main composers all worked well together on. The main theme and lyrics were by Dominik, but the individual parts in the middle section were by Peter and Mike. When I listen to it today, I almost feel reminded of early NEKTAR, of course everything is much sloppier and not as elaborated, but the way of stringing different themes together, there are parallels.
Jack o' Lantern has always evolved; we soon added new parts (also for the vocals), new arrangements and above all we arranged everything more thoroughly and largely did it without the aimless "tootling" in the middle part.
In a way, the song was a precursor of the later Cloud Nine classic Draw Down The Distance. Somehow we always found it more exciting to make longer songs and not just three-minute rock songs. And the improvised take-off parts in the middle or towards the end of a song were also typical (for example later on songs like Draw Down The Distance, Survivor and Empty and Cold).
Narration For Entering Galaxy (With Common Substitutes) (edited)
This was the only track cowritten by guest sax player Björn J. and bassist Mike S. The main riff is based on the Quicksilver Messenger Service's treatment of Bo Diddley's Mona.
The title of that song is kind of self-explanatory.

Es ist sogar jemand vom Hessischen Rundfunk da, der Tonaufnahmen und ein kurzes Interview mit der Band macht. (Ein kurzer Auszug der Hard-Rock-Nummer Have You Got It Yet? wird tatsächlich im Radio gespielt! Leider hat damals niemand den Beitrag mitgeschnitten.) Außerdem erscheinen später Artikel in der SüPo (Südhessische Post), sogar mit Foto, sowie in der Schülerzeitung des Starkenburg-Gymnasiums Heppenheim, der Starschulze Nr. 5.
Wieder wird der Auftritt von unserer psychedelischen Lighshow untermalt – in erster Linie Projektionen dreier Diaprojektoren und des selbstgedrehten Super-8-Films Cloud Nine meets the Psychedelic Banana, besser bekannt unter dem Namen Der Bananenfilm.
Bemerkenswert außerdem: Dominik übernimmt nicht nur den Gesang, sondern spielt zum ersten Mal auch Keyboards. Außerdem wird wieder fleißig improvisiert: Rainfrontier ist über 14 Minuten lang, Jack o' Lantern bringt es inklusive einem Schlagzeugsolo von knapp 8 Minuten auf insgesamt gut 25 Minuten, und der Encore-Jam dauert immerhin 13 Minuten.
There is even someone from the Hessischer Rundfunk who makes sound recordings and a short interview with the band. (A short excerpt of the hard rock number Have You Got It Yet? is actually played on the radio! Unfortunately, no one recorded it at the time). Articles also appear later in the SüPo (Südhessische Post), even with a photo, as well as in the student newspaper of the Starkenburg-Gymnasium Heppenheim, the Starschulze No. 5.
Again, the performance is accompanied by our psychedelic light show - primarily projections of three slide projectors and the Super 8 film Cloud Nine meets the Psychedelic Banana, better known as The Banana Film.
Also noteworthy: Dominik not only takes over the vocals, but also plays keyboards for the first time. In addition, there is again a lot of improvisation: Rainfrontier is over 14 minutes long, Jack o' Lantern, including a drum solo of just under 8 minutes, lasts a good 25 minutes in total, and the Encore Jam lasts 13 minutes.

Da
hat der nette Herr von der Süpo wohl was falsch verstanden: Cloud Nine, der erste Teil des Bandnamens,
ist ein Psychedelic-Soul-Song, der natürlich von den Temptations stammt, und der zweite Teil des Bandnamens
(Vitamin C) ist ein Song von Can.
MB, der Verfasser der Konzertkritik in der Starschulze, der Dominiks gesangliche Qualitäten doch ein wenig, nun ja, sagen wir mal in Frage stellte, war kein anderer als Markus B., den wir nach diesem Gig kurzerhand als Sänger verpflichteten. So viel sei schon einmal verraten: Er war bei zwei Auftritten dabei, bevor er das Handtuch warf. Seinen Debütauftritt mit der Band hatte er heftigst versemmelt, und nach seinem zweiten Versuch hatte er dann genug. War ihm wohl zu stressig, den Frontman zu machen ...
The nice gentleman from the Süpo must have misunderstood something: Cloud Nine, the first part of the band's name, is a psychedelic soul song, which of course is from the Temptations, and the second part of the band's name (Vitamin C) is a song by Can.
MB, the author of the concert review in Starschulze, who, well, let's say, questioned Dominik's vocal qualities a little bit, was none other than Markus B., whom we hired as singer after this gig without further ado. This much can be revealed already: He joined the band for two gigs before throwing in the towel. He had messed up his debut gig with the band, and after his second attempt he had had enough. It was probably too stressful for him to be the frontman.
