The CNVC#5 line-up (Dominik: keyboards, vocals; Mike: bass, vocals; Andreas Schulz: guitar and Peter Gündling: drums) had a total of four gigs, all in 1990.
Münster (nearby Darmstadt in Hessen) was the fourth and last one with this line-up.

In fact, I have no memory of this gig at all.
However, the tape recording proves that we must have played very loudly and that Andi was very much in love with his distortion unit ...

The set was relatively short by our standards, and it's noticeable that we didn't play Draw Down the Distance or Angel of Mine. I suppose, there were hardly any people there, which is why we decided to keep the set short.

Unfortunately, psychedelic rock wasn't very popular in the villages back then.

After this gig, the band came to an end again.
Andi left and Peter soon also lost the desire to continue. Musical differences, as they say.
So Dominik and I were once again on the lookout for new musicians.

15th Gig: Mannheim-Jungbusch 1990-08-24

Weiter mit der Chronologie der Bandauftritte.

Mannheim-Jungbusch – oje!

On with the chronology of our live gigs.

Mannheim-Jungbusch - oh dear! I have no idea how we came to play this gig. I vaguely remember that Andi organized it somehow.

Third gig with Andi and Peter (Gündling).

We played at some kind of a street festival where the response was unfortunately extremely poor. In fact, the audience consisted mainly of the local boozers, some Turkish guys from the neighborhood who didn't give a shit about us and a few random freaks who happened to be there.

This was deeply disappointing, but despite this, or perhaps because of it, we put on a pretty good, quite heavy, snotty gig. We more or less played for ourselves - and didn't let anything spoil the fun.

Was there anything else worth mentioning?

The gig was in the afternoon, so there was no lightshow.

For some reason we played Rainfrontier in a different arrangement - slow and very heavy, more in the style of AC/DC. That was probably Andi's idea. Oh yes, and during Angel of Mine Andi broke a guitar string, but that didn't stop him from playing on, so everything sounded incredibly out-of-tune. But somehow that suited that stupid gig.

Demo-Aufnahmen, zwischen Mai und August 1990 / Recording demos between May and August 1990

Zwischen Mai und August 1990 nahm die Band in der Besetzung Dominik Engel, Mike Schröder, Andreas Schulz, Peter Gündling im Lorscher Proberaum auf einem 4-Spur-Tape-Recorder einige Stücke auf, die (bis auf eines: Car Car) auf dem Demo „Cloud 9 & the Vitamin C“ (B-CNVC05) landeten.

Between May and August 1990, the band, consisting of Dominik Engel, Mike Schröder, Andreas Schulz and Peter Gündling, recorded several tracks on a 4-track tape recorder in the Lorsch rehearsal room, which (apart from one: Car Car) ended up on the demo "Cloud 9 & the Vitamin C" (B-CNVC05).

Die original Reihenfolge der Aufnahmen war:

The original order of the recordings was:

Angel of Mine (5:06)/Last Night (4:48)/Rainfrontier (3:24)/Survivor (7:30)/Car Car (3:10)/Black Queen (9:40)/Tracks of My Tears (4:17)

Demo-Reihenfolge:

Running order of the demo tape:

a) Black Queen/Survivor

b) Rainfrontier/Angel of Mine/Last Night/Tracks of My Tears

Four of these six tracks were then partly shortened (Black Queen and Rainfrontier) and all were remastered and released on the EP "RAINFRONTIER" (CNVC10) in 2023; Black Queen was also included on the LP (CNVC11). There are probably no more than 20 or 30 of those demo tapes in circulation.

Car Car, Angel of Mine and Survivor have not yet been officially released on vinyl.

13th Gig: Bürstadt, JUZ - 1990-05-19

v. li. n. re: Andy, Peter, Dominik, Mike

Drei neue Songs waren zu hören: Draw Down The Distance, Empty and Cold und Sing A Song.

At the beginning of 1990 the new guitarist, Andreas Schulz, and the new drummer, Peter "Fuchs" Gündling, were found: this was the Mark V line-up. In total there were four live gigs with Andy and Peter.

The first gig with this new line-up was in May 1990 at the JUZ in Bürstadt. The atmosphere was good, there was a lot of improvisation, and for the first time there were even some people in the audience who dared to dance. A completely new sight!

Three new songs were played: Draw Down The Distance, Empty and Cold and Sing A Song. All of them offered enough room for improvisation and exceeded the 10-minute mark.
There was also a longer improvised Blues Jam as an encore with a certain Oleg, a friend of Andreas, on vocals and harmonica. Oleg's voice reminded very much of Captain Beefheart and the good man really gave his best.

Unsere geplanten Vinyl-Veröffentlichungen! – Our scheduled vinyl releases!

Hard to believe, but it's true: CLOUD NINE & THE VITAMIN C release their first LP after such a long time - finally! - their first LP, and there's a 10" record to boot!

The songs from the 10-inch record
Rainfrontier were recorded in the short-lived line-up with Peter Fuchs Gündling on drums and Andy Schulz on guitar, between May and August 1990 in Lorsch. They were only available on the demo MC Cloud 9 & the Vitamin C (B-CNVC-05).

Andy has a completely different style, though no less "psychedelic" than Peter - however, his live playing is a bit uncontrolled, with a lot of wah-wah use and far more effect pedals than that of his predecessor, as well as enriched with a decent dose of feedback ... On the demo, recorded in 1990 with the new line-up, this is unfortunately not as clearly audible as in the live performances, yet Andy contributes some remarkable guitar parts here as well. The boogie passage in Tracks of My Tears really pops and also the sizzling, funky wah-wah sounds are fun. The real highlight, however, is undoubtedly Black Queen, an already older song that builds on a simple bass riff and which, thanks to the new keyboard-dominated arrangement, has already moved almost into the vicinity of prog rock and has meanwhile matured to full bloom. The long, psychedelic piece, in which the organ is very much in the foreground, with a heavily phased bass solo in the middle section played like a guitar solo, is also a live favorite with the audience.

That Cloud Nine's music has its roots at least partly in garage rock and hard rock, on the other hand, is shown by the tracks on the first side of this record. And of course a rousing version of Rainfrontier may not be missing. After all, this is one of the band's oldest songs - and a true classic.

Live, Cloud Nine & The Vitamin C in 1990 are already playing some new songs that were not yet written at the time of the demo recordings. Pieces that represent a clear leap forward in terms of songwriting and catchiness, and which nevertheless offer room for sprawling instrumental passages. Draw Down The Distance can last twenty minutes live. Another strong song, somewhat reminiscent of Quicksilver Messenger Service, is Empty and Cold.

The band's best recordings are to follow two years later. With again a different lineup - the last one before the band ceases to exist.
This last phase is documented on the LP
Draw Down The Distance (CNVC 11).

Draw Down The Distance kann live schon mal zwanzig Minuten dauern.

Down The Distance (CNVC 11) dokumentiert.

The songs that can be heard here on this LP were, with one exception (Black Queen), recorded in 1992 in Bickenbach, a town in Hessen, West-Germany, near Darmstadt, in a semi-professional studio on eight tracks. Black Queen is from the band's demo recorded in 1990 in Lorsch in the keyboardist's basement on a 4-track tape, still with a different line-up, see above.

After Andy Schulz and Peter Gündling left the band in 1991, the remaining two members started looking for a new guitarist and a new drummer. And as chance would have it, a promising guitarist actually came forward in response to a small ad: Pete Hergo. Pete was not only a gifted instrumentalist, but also had an expressive voice. And he also brought along some new songs that fitted in well with the band's existing repertoire.
Pete also knew a technically very good drummer named Chris, whose last name nobody seems to remember.

Even before the band went into the studio with Pete and Chris in 1992, they had recorded a few demos (in 1985, 1989 and 1990), but always with the simplest equipment, and only in their rehearsal room. This time, however, they rented a (semi-)professional recording studio with an 8-track tape machine, including a sound engineer (who was enthusiastic about the band's sound, but also extremely stoned most of the time, so that the result on the tape was sometimes a bit questionable).

In just two days, the basic tracks for a total of six songs were recorded live, and only some vocal and guitar parts were added later. Which shows how well-rehearsed the band was at that time. They really had rehearsed a lot and worked intensively on the songs, and this now proved to be a great advantage. Studio time was expensive; they wouldn't be able to afford many recording days.

Although the mood at the beginning of the session was quite good, this unfortunately changed on the second day. Two band members (names shall not be mentioned here) fell out so badly that the recording sessions were stopped and the band broke up shortly afterwards. The recordings in Bickenbach were never really finished, let alone mixed properly. All they had as a result of the sessions was a rough mix on tape. Very sad, indeed!

No one had the power to care about the completion of the project at the time, and so time passed and nothing happened. Years later, when Mike tried to find the original tapes to remix them, he found out that they had been lost. The sound engineer said he remembered that they had been damaged and that he had thrown them away.
Fuck!

But Mike did not give up. He chose the best versions of the tape copies and started remixing the songs. There were some drop-outs on the old tapes that had to be cut out, and here and there a little bit was recut and shortened, also wind sound was added in some places to drown out the loud tape noise. But there was one major problem that couldn't be fixed this way: The vocals on Empty and Cold were simply recorded far too irregularly, too soft in some places, too loud in others, and the keyboard was completely distorted in the last part of the song. It was no use, this had to be corrected, and after much toing and froing, Dominik was finally persuaded to re-record the vocal track in 2022 so that the original poorly recorded vocals could be overdubbed. Apart from that, nothing was re-recorded.
The final touches were added by the remastering of a gentle sound engineer called Alain Paul. (A big thank you to Louis Gee for this contact!).
The result is, in my opinion, worth listening to, especially when considering how old the material on this LP is and the conditions under which the recordings were made.

The outstanding song on the LP is, of course, the title track Draw Down The Distance. Psychedelic rock in its purest form! But the other songs are also of high quality throughout. It Makes No Difference and Call sound relatively heavy for Cloud Nine, almost like punk songs, while you can definitely hear a rave influence in the style of The Charlatans on My Sunday On A Friday. Empty and Cold with its Bo-Diddley-like riff, on the other hand, is reminiscent of early Quicksilver Messenger Service. Sunspots at the beginning evokes memories of Dark Star by the Grateful Dead, but also would not be out of place on a sitar rock sampler. By the way, the flute in the intro is played by Lightshow man Christof Köhler. The instrumental, very relaxed folky piece is the perfect ending for a versatile album. And then, as a bonus, there is the band classic Black Queen from the 1990 demo session...

Psychedelic Rock in Reinkultur! Empty and Cold wiederum erinnert stellenweise mit seinem Bo-Diddley-artigen Riff an frühe Quicksilver Messenger Service.

The two vinyl discs should be released this year, the 10" hopefully already in October, the 12" LP probably not until November.
